How Sosews Quilts started
My name is Sonja Koch. My hobby of making quilts got started during college breaks. I graduated from college in 1993 with a degree in accounting. I started my public accounting career right away. Boy it didn’t take me long to find out that I hated doing audits and taxes. I needed to find something else to do for a living.
By this time, my husband and I were ready to start a family. So I wanted to find something to do from home. Making quilts to sell at local craft fairs was one option I came up with. But I couldn’t find a machine quilter in our area to quilt them for me. That was the spark of inspiration I was looking for. Surely I was not the only person who liked to make the quilt tops, but didn’t want to spend a lot of time hand quilting. So I bought a Gammill longarm quilting machine. Since 1994, I have been very happily working as a professional longarm machine quilter.
During the years of doing machine quilting, a few customers asked me to make a quilt for them out of their t-shirts. All these customers were so thrilled with their finished quilts. It was very rewarding to make a quilt for someone that instantly has so much sentimental value. Making t-shirt quilts has since become one of the main services I offer.
Donna sews together all the random and random sashed t-shirt quilts. She also sews together most of the custom quilt tops. Donna has sewn most of her life, making clothes and sewing for the public. She started quilting in 1997 when her first grandchild was born and has made 100’s of quilts since then. Donna used to teach Family & Consumer Science in school. She loves teaching people to sew and sharing her knowledge. Donna & her husband live on a farm where they raise cattle and have a wood business. When she’s not quilting, she puts up hay and helps cut fire wood.
Jazzmyn prepares your t-shirts to be sewn into a quilt top. She cuts the t-shirts apart, presses interfacing onto them and then cuts the t-shirts into quilt squares. The t-shirts look amazing when she gets done with them. Jazzmyn is a junior at the University of Arkansas getting her degree in political science with a minor in Arabic. She enjoys being in nature and spending time with her family and friends. Working at SoSews Quilts is her first experience with quilt making. She is enjoying learning all the steps of making a quilt.
Margie sews together all of the sashed quilts and sews some of the custom quilt tops. Margie learned to sew at the age of 8 and always made her own clothes. She first learned about quilting by helping her momma and the church ladies quilt mission quilts. In addition to making quilts, Margie loves flower gardening and working in her yard. But mostly she loves to be in her sewing room doing machine embroidery, making decorative pillows, and making doll clothes. She also makes little girls dresses and christening gowns for sale.
